First, ow. Okay, got that done. Paracetamol + codeine is a splat!person's best friend. Trouble is, I keep forgetting to take the next dose until well after all the stiff-and-sore has come back. I can't claim to be dazed forever! I also belatedly discovered that while I hadn't damaged the cat... He'd left take-off marks: four astonishingly widely-spaced scratches just above my right hip. Ungrateful beast. I might have landed on him, if I'd fallen forward instead of back. That does explain the blood on the front of my sleepshirt, though.

We returned home yesterday lunchtime (and my back didn't like the ride – acceleration, braking, and all the inevitable shifts of balance/pressure). After we'd off-loaded the baggage my brother went off to the airport to collect sister, niece, nephew and niece-in-law, run the latter two home on the other side of the city, and bring the first two back to my place, where their car was parked, so they could go home.

Meanwhile I went off to do basic shopping for both our households and to buy Christmas stamps for both of us. I was surprised there wasn't a great queue in the post office; have to be lucky some time! I've decided my overseas cards are going to be New Year cards, though I've despatched all the Australian ones. Given the industrial action, they may well not get there in time for Christmas in any case.

I was supposed to make us a curry last night, but I postponed that (see stiff-and-sore above). Instead, my brother brought pizza to my place – plus a bottle of sparkling shiraz, made by someone called Rumball: that name has to be real! A very pleasant drop, too. Vindaloo plus a vegetable curry tonight instead.

This afternoon I saw the doctor (mine is of course on holidays); she wanted blood tests, but didn't seem to think this performance was due to a TIA, especially as I hadn't blacked out. (Good! I saw too much of that with my mother.)

It's midnight and I am finally checking my mail. *rolls eyes at self*

So apparently my Solstice Present showed up tonight. While I was in the bathtub. Yyyeah. She's a sense of humour on her, does my Lady, and I'm sure it was amusing watching me try to keep my ink and bathwater separate while my couplets were overflowing.

As should be obvious from the VERY rigid scansion of this, it's a song rather than a poem. And yes, it came with a tune, but seeing as how I can compose just fine, but can't write music for shite, the singing of it will have to be a hypothetical thing until such time as I can lay hands on a halfway decent USB mic, and commit it to electrons. For the short term, it could be sung to the tune of The Bells of Paradise in a pinch and come out just fine, if a little repetitive.

I've been seeing far too many sad stories on my f'list recently (and one of them - about Brianna Lacey, a missing 15 year old from Chicago needs all the signal boosting it can get), but this story hits far too close to home...

We learned yesterday that schadenkatze, someone I've known through fandom for more than a dozen years, lost her life to in a house fire early Sunday morning. Her twin schaden_freude (another long-term friend, and someone who had suffered a major loss not so many years ago), was only able to help their elderly mother from the home the three shared. The house itself and almost everything it contained was, as you might imagine, a great loss, but the loss of her twin sister is...unimaginable.

Three people in the home -- a mother in her 80s and two daughters -- were asleep when the fire began. Scott said the deceased -- one of the daughters -- died from smoke inhalation... The mother was in serious condition at St. John's Hospital.
The other daughter was not reported injured.

It's almost the end of another year and I know I don't like to start a new year with the thought that I have debts hanging over my head. I've contacted a few of you personally. But to be honest, I'm sure there are others of you I've forgotton because my memory is not what it once was, so I'm posting here. If anyone owes me something from a charity auction or from a commission I paid for, as of today, you don't owe me anything. We're starting the new year with a clean slate. Especially for the auctions, I donated that money for a reason and was happy to do so. And I'll do it again. But, please, don't feel this is something still hanging over your head. No worries, no problems. You don't owe me a thing. Happy holidays!
